Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Can she?

Sir, — The Left front has nominated Lakshmi Saghal as its candidate for President. With a majority of the electoral college opting for Dr. Kalam, the Left parties' rejection of his candidature on the flimsy ground of his being a non-political candidate betrays a deliberate mood for confrontation and will entail heavy expenditure. Dr. Saghal is one of the best links with the era of freedom struggle — if not the only one — and her credentials for the post is unquestionable. But considering her age, can she withstand the onerous responsibilities — both mentally and physically — as President?

M. Rajaraman,
Pondicherry
