According to Meteorological Department officials, rainfall over the western coast had reduced significantly today. There was a good pressure gradient across the western coast yesterday but satellite pictures today showed a significant change. The officials, however, said that there was no cause for alarm. Noting that surges and lulls in the progress of the monsoon were a normal phenomenon, they said the present slowdown may not last for more than a couple of days. Already, there was thundercloud activity over the Bay of Bengal, and it had persisted for the past few days. It is expected that this could lead to the formation of a low pressure area soon, resulting in the re-activation of the monsoon.
