Assam, Meghalaya move to ease border tension

By Our Staff Correspondent

GUWAHATI JUNE 18 . The Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya, Tarun Gogoi and F.A. Khonglam, met here today to reduce the "border tension'' between the two States.

After the meeting, Mr. Gogoi and Mr. Khonglam told The Hindu that they had decided to maintain status quo on the borders. Mr. Khonglam said there were 12 disputed villages in different areas of the border between the two States.

Mr. Gogoi said they had agreed that no police outposts or pickets would be set up in those areas on either side. But, keeping in mind the insurgency scenario, police of both the Governments should maintain closer liaison and coordination.

For resolution of border disputes, meetings would be held at three levels according to the necessity and urgency of the situation. First, there should be "frequent meetings'' between the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of both sides. Second, when problems cannot be resolved at their level, discussions should be held between the Commissioners, Principal Secretaries and Chief Secretaries.

Third, if that also fails, the two Chief Ministers would meet and sort out the problem.

The Assam-Meghalaya border problem is not new. For a long time, Meghalaya has been claiming large chunks of Assam territory.
