Kournikova crashes out

EASTBOURNE (ENGLAND) June 19. Anna Kournikova's slump continued as he lost to Italian Rita Grande 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 1-6 on Tuesday in the first round of the $585,000 WTA event. This was the 10th defeat in 13 matches for the 21-year-old Russian glamour girl.

It was just like old times for Martina Navratilova, back in singles competition, serving and volleying on grass and winning again.

Playing her first tour singles match in eight years, Navratilova beat Tatiana Panova of Russia 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The victory marked her as the oldest woman ever to win a WTA match.

The results: Rita Grande bt Anna Kournikova 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-1; Meghann Shaughnessy bt Vanessa Webb 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-4); Martina Navratilova bt Tatiana Panova 6-1, 4-6, 6-2; Anastasia Myskina bt Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4. — AP, AFP
