Sedate start to open events

BANGALORE JUNE 19. It was sedate start to the open events of the PSCB inter-unit badminton championship at the Raheja— KBA Stadium here today and all the fancied players, in both the men's and women's sections made it to quarter-final round at the end of the day .

One expected a keen fare in at least two contests, with Thomas Kurian taking on Vijay Lancy and Ravindra Singh 's tie against Ajit Wijetilak.

But the in-form Kurian, simply carried on where he left at the team championship on Tuesday as he pounded his way past Lancy 15-1, 15-12.

Ravindra Singh, attacking on both flanks with panache, was too good for Ajit Wijetilak winning at 15-7, 15-2. The quarter-final line up is:

Men: P. Gopi Chand v Thomas Kurian, Chetan Anand v Arvind Bhat; Nikhil Kanetkar v Siddarth Jain and Abhinn Shyam Gupta v Ravindra Singh.

Women: P. V. V. Lakshmi v C. H. Deepthi; Aparna Popat v Shruthi Kurien; Neelima Choudhry v Manjusha Kanwar B. R.Meenakshi v G.Jwala.
