Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the 65th Conference of presiding officers of legislative bodies, Mr. Purushothaman, said that he was only implementing the system adopted in the two Houses of Parliament. In the past only Doordarshan could telecast the proceedings of the Assembly. But his predecessor allowed a private TV channel, Kairalee, to telecast the sittings. That led to permission being given to other private channels. With the result today there were 12 TV channels covering the proceedings and some regulation was certainly called for. Mr. Purushothaman noted that no legislature had given unrestricted freedom to the TV channels to cover the proceedings. Speaking separately to presspersons, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker, Kesarnath Tripathy said that their House was without major disturbances since 1997 when the ruling BJP and opposition members had indulged in a free-for-all. The proceedings were now going on smoothly. Mr. Tripathy wanted the Conference to consider how criminals could be kept out of legislative bodies. There were problems in barring those facing prosecution in criminal cases.
