India signs extradition treaty with Spain

Madrid June 20. India and Spain today signed a major treaty here to extradite criminals and terrorists wanted by the two Governments, stepping up cooperation with European nations in the global fight against terrorism.

The extradition treaty was signed by the Home Minister, L.K.Advani, who is on a five-day visit to Spain, and the Spanish Justice Minister, Angel Acebes Paniagua, at a ceremony here.

Mr. Advani is leading a high-level delegation which includes the Home Secretary, Kamal Pande, and the Intelligence Bureau chief, K.P. Singh. Besides signing the treaty, Mr. Advani also initialled an agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. This agreement was earlier finalised at the official level.

Tomorrow Mr. Advani would hold discussions here with the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Mariano Rajoy Brey. — PTI
