A Raj Bhavan release today announced the Governor-Chancellor, P.S. Ramamohan Rao's decision to appoint Dr. Ignacimuthu Madras University Vice-Chancellor for three years. He succeeds Pon. Kothandaraman, whose term ends on June 23. The 54-year-old entomoligist and biotechnologist was appointed to head the Bharathiyar University on October 13, 2000. Earlier, he was principal of the Loyola College, Chennai. Dr. Ignacimuthu, who hails from Sindalacherry (now in Theni district), got a Ph.D in genetics from the Delhi University in 1986. He completed post-doctoral works in the Institute of Environment and Ecology, Delhi, and the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, in molecular biology in 1995. Dr. Ignacimuthu began his career as a lecturer in the St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi and later served as principal of the St. Xavier's, Palayamkottai, before moving to the Loyola College. He was involved in introducing biotechnology as a subject in universities, in introducing teacher evaluation by students and in restructuring undergraduate and postgraduate syllabi. Now with the shifting of Dr. Ignacimuthu a vacancy for Vice-Chancellor has arisen in the Bharathiyar University.
