Southern States - Tamil Nadu

Counselling for engineering admissions from Monday

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI June 21. Distributed counselling for ``single window admissions'' to engineering colleges is all set to begin on June 24. The Anna University (which coordinates the single window admissions) hopes to complete a major part of the exercise by July 15, on which day the colleges will open for I B.E/B.Tech, the Vice-Chancellor, E. Balagurusamy, said here today.

In all, 68,410 candidates registered themselves for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2002. The counselling session for admissions to B.Arch would be held on June 24 and for vocational stream candidates on June 25 and 26.

In his first interaction with the media after taking over the post in mid-May, Dr. Balagurusamy said the counselling for academic stream candidates would be held in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai and Coimbatore from June 27.

On the first day, 950 candidates would be called for counselling and the number increased gradually. The main link for the distributed counselling would be a secure `virtual private network' connectivity. This would be backed by two independent VSAT connections and a dial-up ISDN line.

As for the seat matrix, Dr. Balagurusamy and S. Renganarayanan of the TNEA authority said that at present there was no change in the number of seats compared to last year. The State Technical Education department had received no word from the All-India Council for Technical Education on approvals for new branches or additional intake in existing colleges. Last year, of about 48,000 seats available under single window admissions, only about 36,000 were filled and the other seats remained vacant.

Similarly, the AICTE was yet to intimate Tamil Nadu of approval granted for new colleges.

Dr. Balagurusamy said the committee to review the fee structure for technical education had submitted its report and an announcement on the new fee applicable from this year should come from the government soon.

Like last year, the candidates should pay Rs.5,200 (Rs.1100 for SC/ST) during counselling. Those allotted to the Anna University or government-aided colleges should pay the remaining fee during admission.

Those allotted to self-financing colleges/self-supporting courses should pay Rs.5,200 during counselling and the remaining fee within 10 days to get the allotment order. ``If the fee structure is changed, the balance will vary. Students will be informed of the possible change in the fee structure and asked to give an undertaking that he/she will pay the changed fee later.''
