Thackeray 'remarks' spark controversy

Mumbai June 21. The Shiv Sena supremo, Bal Thackeray, has sparked yet another controversy by his reported casteist remarks in the context of a foreign tour by an all-party MLAs team from Maharashtra.

Mr. Thackeray, opposing the State-sponsored MLAs' tour, had on June 19 reportedly said: ``What is the need for our legislators to go abroad when the State's coffers are empty? Why are they going abroad...are there not enough scavengers there?''

The MLAs are slated to go abroad in August under the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association tour to study democratic values. The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, told reporters here that the Government was contemplating legal action against Mr. Thackeray for his remarks.

Government may either consider suo motu action or, based on a complaint and after soliciting the views of the law and judiciary department, initiate necessary action against him. — PTI
