Political parties should keep off Ayodhya issue: Kanchi Acharya

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI June 21. A solution to the Ayodhya issue could be brought about provided political parties, including the BJP, and the VHP stay clear of the controversy, the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Math, Jayendra Saraswati, said here today.

Addressing mediapersons, the Acharya said he was in the process of interacting with the local people of Faizabad, including representatives of about 350 Muslim families, to bring about a solution. A delegation of the local people was scheduled to meet him in Delhi on June 24.

The people of Ayodhya had never sought construction of a Ram temple, he said.

Asked whether a solution could be expected after the meeting, he said it would take two or three more of such sessions and no time-frame could be fixed.

``If the Delhi people do not come in the way the problem will be solved,'' he reiterated.

The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, supported his efforts and had promised to stand by him, while requesting him to take the lead.

Recounting the long relationship the country had with Nepal, the Sankaracharya said King Gyanendra would be visiting Delhi on June 24 and had sought his audience to perform `guru pada puja' at the Kamatchi temple there.
