Telemedicine facility in Pondy

Pondicherry June 21. With a view to procuring expert medical guidance and also to have exchange of ideas between doctors of the general hospital here and those attached to the corproate hospitals, the Department of Health today launched the telemedicine facility.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj who inaugurated the facility and had video-conferencing with the neuro surgeon, Ganapathy at Apollo hospital, said that this was a unique facility introduced in the hospital. This marked the progress the medical institution is now making here. Mr. Valsaraj said that there was also an arrangement to have tele-conference with the doctors at the Naval Hospital in USA. The purpose was to exchange the expertise between the institutions. The facility would be introduced soon in other regions of Pondicherry. The Secretary to Health Department, M.Sathiavathi, the Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan and the Local Administration Minister A Elumalai and legislators, S. P. Sivakumar and P. Anbalagan were among those who witnessed the tele-conferencing and introduction of the facility here.

The Director of Medical Services, D. Thamma Rao and the Medical Superintendent, G. S. Reddy explained to mediapersons the highlights of the new facility. This would be useful also during holding of seminars and conferences at distant places so that the doctors could have any point clarified from inside the chamber without facing the necessity to go over to the venues of the conferences.

The Department currently uses the Integrated Subscriber Digital Network facility for operating the telemedicine facility.

There were proposals to have the facility through satellite soon.

The Administration has spent Rs 10 lakhs for the project.
