Advani holds talks with Spanish leaders

MADRID JUNE 21. Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism today prominently figured in talks the Home Minister, L.K. Advani, had with Spanish leaders even as the two sides agreed on arrangements for information sharing and cooperation between their security agencies to counter activities of Islamic extremist groups.

Mr. Advani, who had wide-ranging parleys with the Spanish Vice-President and Interior Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and the Secretary of State for External Affairs, Miquel Nadal, appreciated the forthright stand of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union that Pakistan must permanently halt cross-border terrorism against India and close terrorist training camps.

Mr. Advani, who had a working breakfast with Mr. Nadal and other Spanish officials, briefed them on the current tensions between India and Pakistan.

The decision on information sharing and cooperation between security agencies to counter activities of extremist Islamic organisations was reached during the talks Mr. Advani had with the Spanish Vice-President on the second day of his five-day visit to this country.

The two leaders also discussed measures for bilateral cooperation to combat the threat posed by international terrorism, official sources said.

They emphasised the importance of the Indo-Spanish Extradition Treaty signed yesterday and were of the view that the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement between the two countries should be brought into force as soon as possible.
