Time bureau chief questioned

By Our Special Correspondent

Alex Perry

NEW DELHI JUNE 21. The Delhi bureau chief of the Time magazine, Alex Perry, who is in the eye of a storm following his write-up on the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's health, was today questioned by the immigration officials for allegedly possessing two British passports. Mr. Perry's session with the officials of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) lasted about two hours this morning.

Sources at the magazine's office here said Mr. Perry drove straight from the airport to the FRRO office. He had gone to Manali a few days ago on an assignment. The FRRO had summoned Mr. Perry for an explanation as to how he was in possession of two passports.

Later in the day, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson denied that Mr. Perry was being harassed by the Government and said the Ministry had nothing to do with his questioning by the FRRO, which was looking into the matter.

Officials at the FRRO were tight-lipped about Mr. Perry's appearance at their office.

Mr. Perry faced the FRRO wrath within days of his write-up concerning the health of the Prime Minister. The article was rubbished by the Government as ``completely biased'' and ``baseless.''
