CPI (M) to celebrate LF Govt.'s silver jubilee

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 21. In order to mark the completion of the silver jubilee of the Left Front Government in West Bengal, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has chalked out an elaborate plan to celebrate it nation-wide.

The CPI (M) general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, politburo members, and the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, would participate in the celebrations and a Minister from the Left Front Government would be present at the venue of each of the over 30 cities and towns.

The CPI (M) central committee had earmarked the period between June 21 and July 6, for the celebrations, which would include public meetings in 19 States.

Mr. Bhattacharjee would be taking part in a public meeting in Maharashtra, where the CPI (M) would have at least four such events. In Uttar Pradesh, the CPI (M) has scheduled five meetings between June 27 and July 3 at Varanasi, Kanpur, Etawah, Bulandshar and Lucknow. Etawah is considered a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has just parted company with the Left.

In Delhi, the CPI (M) meeting would be on June 29 which would be addressed by Mr. Surjeet, the politburo member, Prakash Karat, and the West Bengal Minister, Mohammed Salim.

The CPI (M) has also brought out a pamphlet highlighting the achievements of the Left Front Government ,which completes 25 years in office today.

"For any political party or coalition being in a State Government continuously for 25 years would be a unique record. For a Communist Party and the Left parties to remain in office so long in West Bengal winning a two-thirds majority in six successive elections is all the more remarkable," Mr. Surjeet noted in the pamphlet, which would be made available throughout the country.
