Pondy seeks State help in introducing e-governance

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 21. Pondicherry is keen on sharing the experience of Andhra Pradesh in introducing e-governance in that State. The IT initiatives of AP in providing better governance figured prominently in the discussions the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangaswamy, had with the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in Hyderabad on Friday.

``We are impressed by the strides made by AP in the use of IT in the services sector. We are eager to have collaboration with the Government here in improving the systems in our State,'' Mr. Rangaswamy told mediapersons later.

The Pondicherry Chief Minister handed over a cheque of Rs. 3.7 crores to Mr. Naidu as his State's contribution towards the cost of the Yanam-Yedurlanka bridge which was taken up at a cost of Rs. 120 crores. It had already paid Rs. 80 lakhs as initial payment.

The bridge, linking Yedurlanka in East Godavari district with Yanam (which forms part of Pondicherry) is nearing completion.

The Chief Minister said his State needed the assistance of Andhra Pradesh in setting up software industries.

An earth station and a software park already existed in the State. Expansion of the park to a capacity of one lakh square feet was proposed.

About four IT companies were located in the park at present. "We have made only a beginning in this field,'' the Chief Secretary, T.T. Jacob, who accompanied the Chief Minister, said.

Mr. Rangasamy said the other issue he discussed with Mr. Naidu was the need to augment drinking water supply from the Godavari to Yanam. Mr. Naidu agreed to the suggestion of setting up a technical committee consisting of representatives of the two States. At present Yanam was receiving only 15 cusecs of water out of the committed 20 cusecs. The AP Government agreed to increase the supplies to 30 cusecs and the technical committee would work out the modalities.

The Pondicherry Chief Minister also visited the sports facilities being created at Gachibowli and other places for the National Games, which, he said, are very impressive. The Yanam MLA, M. Krishna Rao, and the Yanam administrator, Gautham Reddy, accompanied the Chief Minister.
