Liver dialysis system for NIMS

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 21. A liver dialysis system, known as molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS), has been acquired for the first time in the country by the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here.

Liver dialysis is the latest advancement in the management of liver failure caused by acute or chronic liver diseases. Developed by two German scientists, it is now available in about 25 countries. It is considered a very safe and effective modality that can be used even in very sick patients.

MARS uses a special membrane-based technology to specifically clean albumin-bound toxins accumulated in the blood of liver failure patients. Other artificial liver support systems have not been successful because they also remove other vital substances. This was stated in a press release issued by K. V. Dakshinamurthy, Head, Department of Nephrology, and Ajit Kumar, Head, Department of Gastroenterology, NIMS.
