`Movies do no honour for Bhagat Singh'

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 21. A leading social organisation, Jan Seva Sangathan, today criticised the mad race for making many movies simultaneously on the young firebrand freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Instead, it pleaded for developing the two spots, Bhagat Singh's birthplace and the museum projecting his life and struggle, which stand neglected.

Lamenting that crores of rupees were being spent on making movies on the same subject without any cause being served, the Jan Seva Sangathan president, Kuldeep Kumar Kohli, said the two spots located on the Chandigarh-Jalandhar highway were crying for attention.

The producers of these movies should donate some of their earnings for the uplift of these two spots if they are concerned about Bhagat Singh and his cause. The matter has also been brought to the notice of the Punjab Chief Minister, Amrinder Singh, for necessary action.

He said Khatkar Kalan, which is close to Banga and is between Nawashahar and Banga, is the birthplace of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. These two properties need to be developed and converted into places of historical importance. The area around the museum is in bad shape and effort needs to be made to convert it into a beautiful park and a tourist destination. ''However, in case the Punjab Government is unable to take up this issue on their own, we offer the services of our organisation in this regard,'' he added.

Stating that the village was in a state of neglect, Mr. Kohli said there was no overhead tank and no proper drainage for water. The people feel that politicians come with promises never to be implemented and filmmakers have exploited the name of the freedom fighter to pursue their own agenda.

There was no real effort to revive the fond memories of the great leader and everybody was interested in cornering the limelight and then doing a disappearing act.
