CMDA demolishes parts of Triplicane building

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI June 21. The CMDA today demolished parts of a building in Triplicane that had three floors more than permitted. The demolition was the third building to go under the agency's ``wrecking ball'' since it began its drive this week to pull down illegal constructions and draw more people to its regularisation scheme. CMDA authorities said the building on the Triplicane High Road had approval only for a three-storey structure. But the promoter had constructed six floors ignoring stop-work and demolition notices. The three extra floors were not qualified for regularisation, they said.

The CMDA `strategically' demolished portions of the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building. The building owner, A. L. Sukumar, said he approached the CMDA last week to regularise the building, but it refused his application. The building was completed up to the fifth floor by then and work was continuing on the sixth floor, he said.
