Complete work on stadium, BMP told

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore June 21. The Bangalore Mayor, K. Chandrashekar, has instructed officials of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) to complete work on the long delayed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Stadium in the Rajajinagar industrial area on priority.

The Rs. 2.5 crore stadium is yet to be used though the foundation stone was laid four years ago when Padmavathi Gangadhara Gowda was the Mayor. Although some work was carried out on the stadium during the tenures of successive mayors, it is yet to be made ready for holding sports events.

Mr. Chandrashekar, who inspected the Rajajinagar industrial area on Friday, said the stadium work should be completed fast as it would help sportspersons in the area who did not have adequate facilities.

The Mayor also asked BMP officials to protect public property around the stadium from encroachments, by fencing it.

He inspected the desilting of the primary and secondary storm-water drains, now going on in areas surrounding the Dasarhalli Lake. When completed, the drains will carry away rainwater and prevent flooding.

Mr. Chandrashekar visited the Basava Vana in Basavesvaranagar and the park in the Karnataka Housing Board Colony, and instructed Horticulture Department officials to improve them and provide more facilities. He also ordered fencing of a park on 17th Cross Road in the area.

Apart from sanctioning a "high mast" lamp for Havanur Circle in Basavesvaranagar, he asked for the shifting of two streetlamps which obstructed traffic. Other orders given by the Mayor in the area included setting up of a separate market for flower vendors near Jaimuni Rao Circle; construction of a modern bus shelter; construction of public toilets under the Nirmala Bangalore scheme; and, repairs to the BMP School in Basavesvaranagar 6th Block. 10th Main Road in the same block was to be widened to cope with increasing traffic.

The Mayor gave instructions for completing before June 24, construction of a retaining wall for a primary storm-water drain passing through Basavesvaranagar 4th Block.
