VVIPs left 'powerless'

By Lalit K. Jha

NEW DELHI JUNE 21. Almost all of Central and South Delhi along with several other parts of the capital reeled under an acute power failure today, following tripping of the Badarpur Thermal Power Station, the Pragati Power Plant and the Indraprastha Power Station. Power supply to important security installations and VVIP areas, including the Prime Minister's residence, Rashtrapati Bhavan and North and South Blocks of the Central Secretariat too was hit, because of outage of the gas turbines. The second and third layers of power supply were tapped by the authorities to tide over the crisis.

Though residents of a large number of areas complained that there was no electricity for the better part of the day and cuts continued till late night, Delhi Vidyut Board officials insisted that normality was restored by afternoon.

A major disaster in the entire northern region was averted by the Northern Grid Load Despatch Centre. The situation worsened after all the lines and units of the Badarpur Thermal Power Station tripped at 10.06 a.m. on Friday.
