Corpn. asks Govt. to fill vacancies in dispensaries

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI June 22. The Chennai Corporation has appealed to the State Government to consider filling vacancies in its dispensaries on a priority basis.

The Appointments Committee of the civic agency, chaired by the acting Mayor, `Karate' R.Thyagarajan, today appealed to fill vacancies for nine doctors, 18 pharmacists, 18 male staff and 18 female staff. The civic agency controls 72 dispensaries and four testing labs, apart from 93 health posts under the district family welfare programme.

Though the vacancies arose more than a year ago, the Corporation's earlier request to fill the vacancies were turned down by the Government.

An official communique from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department in March noted that the vacancies could not be filled because of the Government's poor financial condition. The letter is likely to be placed before the council at its meeting on June 28.The Appointments Committee asked the Government to `reconsider' its decision in view of the importance of the posts.

The post for a doctor to take care of the Tuberculosis Control remained vacant at the dispensary at CIT Nagarfor more than a year. ``Till last month, the dispensary did not even have a single doctor. The vacancy was filled only last month.
