Deric Pinto moves into lead

KOCHI JUNE 22. For the second successive day, a coach hogged the limelight at the 14th Cusat Open all-India Fide-rated chess tournament for the Bull Chess Trophy here on Saturday.

Deric Pinto, who runs a chess school in Mangalore, pipped some big stars and moved into sole lead after the fifth round at the Cochin University campus here. He jolted the ninth-seeded U.S. Satheesan and earned his fifth point from as many rounds.

Four players — Tamil Nadu's R.R. Laxman, S. Arun Prasad, Andhra's P.D.S. Girinath and Kerala's M.B. Muraleedharan — were in the second spot with 4.5 points. Sunday is a rest day.
