Reacting to the CPI(M) description of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a missile man, Mr. Mahajan had reportedly raised doubts about Captain Sahgal's bonafides as a Gandhian. "All we know of her is that she had put a gun to her shoulder and marched with Subash Chandra Bose,'' Mr. Mahajan was reported as saying. The CPI(M) was quick to respond. "It is unfortunate that those associated with the murder of Mahatma Gandhi are now casting aspersions on those who have fought valiantly for the freedom." Mr. Yechury said the opposition to Captain Sahgal's candidature was because she symbolised the multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic unity of the people. He said that the unity forged by the people during the freedom struggle, "is being disrupted by the RSS- BJP-led communal forces today.''
