Madrassa Act opposed

MANGALORE June 22. The Dakshina Kannada District Committee of the Muslim Youth League has alleged that the Congress Government in the State is making an attempt to re-introduce the Madrassa Act through the backdoor.

In a press release here on Saturday, the president of the league, Syed Basha Mohamed Thangal, has said that the Karnataka Madrassa Act, 2001 was anti-Muslim and that the implementation of the Act would be detrimental to Muslims. The Act would allow the setting up of government-controlled madrassas, with the Government deciding on the syllabus and the formation of the madrassa committees. To create awareness among Muslims on the provisions of the Madrassa Act of 2001, the league proposed to bring out a handbook by the last week of August and planned to organise a public meeting sometime later, the release said.
