Tears change Mahathir's mind

KUALA LUMPUR JUNE 22 . The Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, announced today that he was stepping down as president of the ruling United Malays National Organisation.

Mr. Mahathir made the announcement in his closing remarks to the annual assembly of his party and was immediately swamped by supporters begging him to change his mind.

However, Mr. Mahatir changed his decision on the plea of his weeping supporters asking him to stay. — AFP
