Concern over growing abuse of animals

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI June 22. Speakers, at a function here on Saturday, reinforced the need for protecting animals and showing care to them.

They highlighted the cruelties meted out to animals and commended activists, police officials and mediapersons, who were working for the cause of animal welfare.

The chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation, Jayanthi, who gave away the Jaigopal Garodia Animal Welfare awards, said the increasing abuse of animals was the consequence of largescale consumerism.

She called upon the People for Animals (PFA), which instituted the awards, to pay focus on leather export industry.

Leather should be skinned only from animals killed in emergencies, not from healthy animals, suggested the secretary of the Animal Welfare Board of India, Somesh Banik. He also pointed to the plight of laboratory animals, questioning the correctness of results from experimenting on animals in poor conditions.

The recipients of the awards were Chanda Walke (activist) and Pon Manickavel, (Superintendent of Police-Chengalpattu East) besides P. Oppili and Nikhila Natrajan, journalists working in The Hindu and The New Indian Express.

The awards carried a cash prize of Rs.5,000, a gold medal and a citation.

The PFA staff, including its manager Daniel and veterinarian M.S. Muralidharan were also honoured.

An impromptu award was presented to the co-founder of PFA, Shiranee, by the Annapoorani Charitable Trust. The Special Public Prosecutor of the Madras High Court, P.N. Prakash, and the PFA co-founder, Marieen, also spoke.
