They highlighted the cruelties meted out to animals and commended activists, police officials and mediapersons, who were working for the cause of animal welfare. The chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation, Jayanthi, who gave away the Jaigopal Garodia Animal Welfare awards, said the increasing abuse of animals was the consequence of largescale consumerism. She called upon the People for Animals (PFA), which instituted the awards, to pay focus on leather export industry. Leather should be skinned only from animals killed in emergencies, not from healthy animals, suggested the secretary of the Animal Welfare Board of India, Somesh Banik. He also pointed to the plight of laboratory animals, questioning the correctness of results from experimenting on animals in poor conditions.
