Check VHP activities, say Left parties

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 23. The Left parties have expressed concern over the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's turn-around on the court verdict, vis-a-vis Ayodhya.

Warning the Vajpayee Government of serious consequences of such an `agenda' threatening the unity and integrity of the country, they demanded action to check the VHP's activities.

"This was only to be expected," the CPI(M) politburo said in a statement on the VHP's volte-face reverting from its earlier assurance in March this year that it would abide by the court verdict on the Ayodhya issue.

The party said the RSS-led saffron combine, by flagrantly threatening to violate the Constitution and the law of the land, was seeking to whip up communal passions once again.

It warned that the VHP's plan to start a campaign from July end to culminate in early 2003 would "further vitiate the atmosphere and spread the communal poison deeper'' in the country.

The CPI(M) said the VHP's threats of `another partition' of the country and hailing the State-sponsored Gujarat's genocide clearly revealed their gameplan.

"While the BJP will use this communal polarisation for its political benefit at a time when its mass support is fast dwindling, its allies in the NDA are answerable to the people.

The so-called secular allies of the BJP have become willing accomplices to further the RSS political agenda,'' the statement said.

The CPI, strongly condemning the "communal fascist utterances'' of Ashok Singhal and others, demanded that the Vajpayee Government crack down on the activities of the VHP and the Sangh Parivar.

The party said it was now clear that the Gujarat carnage was a pre-planned attack on the minority community by the Sangh Parivar outfits with the "connivance'' of the Narendra Modi Government. "Now the VHP tries to extend it to other States by questioning the patriotism of Muslims.

These forces are determined to destroy the unity and integrity of the country. The VHP is once again raising the Ayodhya issue and challenging the authority of the Supreme Court and the law of the land,'' the CPI said.

Sharing similar views, the CPI(ML) demanded a ban on the VHP and arrest of its leaders for "their communal plotting on Ayodhya and role in the genocide in Gujarat.''

The party said it would launch a nationwide `save democracy, save independence' campaign between June 26 and August 9 and organise a national convention `against communal fascism' on Wednesday.
