The Medical Council of India (MCI), at its meeting to be held tomorrow, is to take up the issue of according sanction to the Palakkad-based Imam Razi Muslim Educational Charitable Trust, to be set up by the Kamaliya Medical College, at Mala of Thrissur district. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Planning, after holding a personal hearing with the representatives of the Trust, has forwarded the application submitted by the Trust to the MCI. The Ministry has asked the MCI to evaluate the proposal for establishing a new medical college. The University of Calicut, on the basis of a report submitted by the local inquiry committee, has agreed in principle, to affiliate the proposed medical college, subject to the grant of permission by the Union Government. In the essentiality certificate issued by the Department of Health, it has been clarified that the Trust owns and manages a 300-bed hospital at the proposed location and that it is desirable to establish a medical college there in public interest. The State Government has made it clear that adequate clinical materials as per the MCI norms are available there. It has been further certified that in case the applicant fails to create infrastructure for the medical college as per the MCI norms and fresh admissions are stopped by the Central Government, the State shall take over the responsibility of the students already admitted to the college with the permission of the Central Government. V.V. Aboobaker, general secretary of the Trust, said that an earnest attempt had been made to fulfil all requirements like, men, materials and facilities, as stipulated by the MCI for starting a medical college. The Trust was now awaiting the letter of intent from the MCI, he added.
