Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
Using the technique of Testicular Fine Needle Aspiration (TEFNA), a team of doctors led by Santhamma Mathew, were able to help a 28-year-old woman conceive. She is said to be the first in south Kerala to become a mother using the technique. The technique involves direct retrieval of sperms from the testicular glands of the male. The procedure of aspirating sperms from the testes does not require anaesthesia. These sperms are cleansed and nourished with nutrients and then injected into the egg of the woman using a micro- manipulator, employing a technique called `Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection''. The eggs are fertilised in special incubators and after a pre-determined duration of embryo growth, the embryos are transferred to the uterus of the woman.
