PM rejects demand

NEW YORK JUNE 23. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, rejected today the demand for autonomy by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah. In an interview to Newsweek, Mr. Vajpayee, asked if autonomy was a long-term solution for Kashmir, said, "We are for the devolution of power."

In New Delhi, the Minister of State for Home, I.D. Swami, ruled out the demand for any pre-1953 status, but said the Government was not averse to any fresh proposal. "Jammu and Kashmir has far greater autonomy as compared to other States and if anything more is needed, the Government will think over it," he said.
