Sir, The charge of V.S. Venkatavaradhan (June 21) that A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had talked flippantly about nuclear weapons during his press meet is unjustified. His advice that Dr. Kalam should be more careful in pronouncing on war-related matters is unwarranted as Dr. Kalam had not been flippant or unguarded in his statements. He had only stated that nuclear weapons had helped avert a war and had beautifully summed up our nuclear policy in precise and set remarks ``we need a minimum deterrent,'' no first use, no further test, etc. To stress on the need for defence preparedness should not be confused with war-mongering.
R. Narasimhan,
Chennai
