Hamas leader under arrest

Gaza City June 24. The spiritual leader of the radical Islamic Hamas movement today rejected the orders of the PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, putting him under house arrest, as his supporters clashed with the Palestinian police, outside his Gaza City home.

Police and security officers surrounded the blind cleric, Sheikh Yassin's house in the western Gaza City early in the morning, acting on the orders of Mr. Arafat, a day after arresting an unspecified number of Hamas militants.
