Sir, The Vishwa Hindu Parishad's declaration that it is not going to abide by the judicial verdict on the Ayodhya issue should the same go against it is disgusting, to say the least. Shifting the goal posts to suit their convenience is the trademark of all opportunistic organisations, which thrive at the expense of people's emotions. I see no distinction between the "jehadis" in Pakistan and the VHP and its likes in India. The induction of Vinay Katiyar as chief of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the BJP has to be seen in the light of this development. The BJP should understand that by propping up individuals and organisations which do not follow the rule of law, it is not doing a service either to the people or to the Constitution. There can be no room for parties or personalities in our polity whose priorities are partisan, and out of touch with the real necessities of the people.
Sanjay Bhattacharya, Pondicherry
