Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Hereditary leaders

Sir, — When the States were merged and integrated with the country by the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, it was only Kashmir which remained as a special entity. It was given a special status under Article 370 of the Constitution. Karan Singh was the last of the dynastic rule of feudal lords, so, we thought. We are wrong. Sheikh Abdullah became the Prime Minister of Kashmir and president of the National Conference. He was succeeded by his son, Farooq Abdullah, and now his son, Omar Abdullah, has been crowned. It was dynastic rule all through. We also have Sonia Gandhi, late Rajiv Gandhi's wife and an aspirant for Prime Ministership.

Why blame lesser politicians if they groom their off-spring? Even diseases like diabetes and TB etc., are said to be hereditary.

P.J. Bagilthaya, Bangalore
