Presidential candidates

Sir, — Supriya RoyChowdhury's write-up `The Presidential election' (June 22) was an incisive piece. While none would like to question the credentials of Abdul Kalam as a presidential candidate, it is common knowledge that the NDA had political motives behind nominating him. It was a face-saving exercise for the BJP after the Gujarat mayhem.

Even though Dr. Kalam sports a secular image with his reported traits of the majority community, his stoic silence over the Gujarat communal carnage makes one ponder over his candidature.

The Left has put up a symbolic fight in Lakshmi Sahgal, whose antecedents stand her in good stead for the Presidential race. With the disunity in the Opposition ranks brought to the fore and the further slip in credibility of the Left, one understands the note of pessimism on which the author concludes.

Sajith, Thiruvananthapuram
