Sir, The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has virtually closed the door on the possibility of an early settlement to the Ayodhya issue by stating that it will dissociate itself from any court verdict on the issue (June 23). The statement that the Ram temple issue is a matter of Hindu belief and hence beyond the purview of the judiciary seems an after-thought for backtracking on the assurance given to the Government earlier and clearly exposes the organisation's double-speak. The VHP international general secretary, Praveenbhai Togadia's warning to Muslims about another partition and his claim that the recent communal violence in Gujarat symbolised the first positive response of Hindus to Muslim fundamentalism are highly provocative and reprehensible.
