Letters to the Editor
Sir, Recently, I travelled from Chennai to Mumbai by Chennai Express. I began to count the movements of pantry-men. By the time the train reached Renigunta, uniformed pantry-men crossed my bay 170 times. After Renigunta, a lot of unauthorised vendors joined these aisle-walkers. I counted 122 of them till the train reached Dadar. Of them 87 were hawkers who sold everything from eatables to bangles. The other 35 comprised beggars, 12 self-appointed floor cleaners and 14 persons with various physical handicaps. Two ticket examiners made one visit each. I was glad to note that the railways provides indirect employment to so many people. I want to know from the authorities whether the passenger is entitled to peaceful undisturbed travel.
S. Kothandaraman, Karaikal, T.N.
