Create right climate for coalition govts, says Vajpayee

By J. P. Shukla

LUCKNOW JUNE 27. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has said that the coalition Government in Uttar Pradesh must fulfil the aspirations of the people. And that it should function in the true spirit of coalition and solve the problems of the common people with the cooperation of all concerned. Mr. Vajpayee, who arrived here today on a two-day visit, was inaugurating a circular railway service and flagging off a Janshatabdi Express service between Lucknow and Varanasi.

If a single party were able to form a government, it would be the best option in a democracy, he said. But when no party secured a majority, all efforts should be made to run successful coalition governments.

All the parties to the coalition should amicably sort out the problems coming in the way of its smooth functioning and the ``right atmosphere'' should be created. "This is the age of coalition governments. But to ensure that such governments can run successfully, there is need for creating the right atmosphere by dealing amicably with all the problems coming in its way by all the parties concerned,'' Mr. Vajpayee said.

Urging the Opposition to cooperate with the Government on important national issues and international matters concerning India, Mr. Vajpayee said he himself was seeking the support of everyone in sorting out the problems.

The country was progressing in every field. The foreign exchange reserves had increased, there were vast reserves of food grains, prices had stabilised and inflation had been checked. Efforts were also being made to improve transport services. Like the golden quadrangle planned to connect the four metropolitan cities through a new network of roads, there was need to connect these cities through rail routes too, he said. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, for giving the circular railway to the people of Lucknow, his parliamentary constituency. The service would go a long way in solving the transport problem of the city.

In her address, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and vice-president, Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati, asked the Prime Minister to consider a special economic package for the State. However, Mr. Vajpayee did not give her a direct reply. Instead, he said the Governments should spend their money "wisely." If some special assistance was required, it could be looked into.

Others present on the occasion included Mr. Kumar, the Uttar Pradesh Governor, Vishnu Kant Shastri, and the Union Ministers, Ananth Kumar and O. Rajgopal.
