Police sources said the militants struck around 8 p.m. and opened fire on the policemen who were on duty in the market. Two police personnel, Abdul Khaliq, assistant sub-inspector, and Mohammad Ramzan, constable, died instantly while the third died of injuries in hospital. Eyewitnesses said police and paramilitary forces present in the area opened fire and the exchange continued for some time. One report said that some civilians also died in the shootout. Chaos and confusion prevailed in the area as it was the first major attack by militants after the Kaluchak attack in Jammu on May 14.
Shepherds gunned down
Elsewhere, militants gunned down five shepherds of the Gujjar community in Shopian area. Police said they received a report that five dead bodies were lying in the woods of this remote tehsil headquarters.
Jawans killed
Earlier in the day, militants exploded a powerful landmine on the Frisal-Chandanwari road, leading to the Amarnath cave shrine, killing three jawans of the16 Garhwal unit of the Army travelling in an ambulance. The jawans were going to Chandanwari as part of a team for making healthcare arrangements for the Amarnath yatra, expected to start from July 22.
