PW cautioned against taking advantage of Govt. position

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 27. The Home Minister, T. Devender Goud, has advised the CPI-ML People's War (PW) not to try to take advantage of the Government's efforts to restore peace in the extremist-affected areas by holding negotiations with the naxalite party.

Addressing the Passing-out Parade of the sixth batch of Deputy Superintendents of Police at the A.P. Police Academy (APPA) here on Thursday, Mr. Goud cautioned the PW not to take advantage of the Government's sincerity in finding a permanent solution to the extremist problem. He also clarified that there was no need for the Government to use the talks as part of a strategy, since it was only interested in finding a permanent solution.

The Home Minister urged the new DSPs to implement the oath they were taking in the passing-out parade to protect human rights and uphold the rule of law. Tracing the ever changing role of the police in the society, Mr. Goud pointed out that the police which was used as an instrument for maintaining law order by the British, had now been entrusted the job of protecting people after Independence.

During this transition phase, the police department faced criticism, but by and large the department was getting used to the new role. "Training plays a very crucial role in this process''. He recalled that the APPA had designed many training in-service modules as the Government firmly believed that training was an essential component in humanising the police force.

The APPA Director, M. Ratan, in his welcome address appealed to the Government to allocate additional funds to the Academy. He made a specific appeal to the Government for not withdrawing the 30% incentive being provided to the APPA training staff.

The uniqueness of the passing out parade was that the entire batch of DSPs consisted of only nine persons and all the four prizes, the CM's Pistol for best all round performance, HM's baton for best performance in indoor subjects, DG&IGP's Rolling Trophy for best performance in outdoor subjects and APPA Director's Rolling Trophy for standing first in firing was bagged by probationary DSP, R.N. Ammi Reddy.
