Naxals blast CPI leader's house

By Our Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM JUNE 29. The People's War naxalites blasted the house of Pakalapati Venkateswar Rao (Peddabbai), the CPI district committee member, at Bhupatiraopet village, 20 km from Manuguru, on Friday night.

According to reports reaching here, a 12-member dalam, led by Manganna, secretary of the PW Eturunagaram area committee, stormed into the village around 1 a.m and blew up the house using detonators. The damage was said to be extensive.

The action, as the PW claimed in a poster put up in the village, was in retaliation to the killing of the two women activists in Mamillavai by the police. The house was, however, deserted by the CPI leader 10 years ago following threats from the PW. The police said the CPI leader had left 170 acres of agriculture land for the past 10 years in the village as the PW wanted him to abandon the land. Peddabbai was one of the staunch supporters of the demand for amending the scheduled area regulation 1/70. The police suspected the incident to be part of the PW ambush plan for the police. No one could reach the village, which is a PW stronghold, till late in the evening.
