Inaugurating a seminar organised by the CPI(M) district committee in connection with the 25th anniversary of the LDF Government in West Bengal here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said that the landlords had been trying to edge out the LDF Governments in the State ever since the Land Reforms Act of 1957 enacted by the first LDF Government headed by late EMS Namboodirippad. The LDF could not succeed in implementing land reforms in the State because of the teaming up of the landlords and the rich against them. When it was found that the `Vimochana Samaram' had failed to make an impact in the State, the EMS Government was dismissed according to the wishes of Indira Gandhi. The landlords saw to it that the LDF did not come to power in the State for two consecutive terms and for furthering their interests, they often lined up with the UDF and voted for it, Mr. Achuthanandan said. Had the LDF Government succeeded in implementing land reforms, it could have come to power for consecutive terms. Referring to the LDF Governments in West Bengal as exemplary Governments, Mr. Achuthanandan said that these Governments had implemented land reforms and because of that, the people there loved them and continued to install the. The idea of decentralisation of power to local bodies was first successfully implemented in West Bengal, which was then replicated in other parts of the country. Though there were attacks against minorities in the rest of India, West Bengal had not witness any such attacks. In a veiled attack against the CPI, he said that there were some Communist parties that supported Indira Gandhi, misunderstanding that her policies were socialist in nature. These parties even supported the Emergency. The RSP and the Forward Bloc were against Emergency, he added. The former district secretary of the CPI(M), Mamakutty, presided. The CPI(M) district secretary, K. P. Aravindakshan, K. Radhakrishnan, MLA, ASN Nambeesan and V. Aravindakshan were among those who spoke on the occasion.
