Monsoon fury continues

MUMBAI JUNE 29. As monsoon fury continued to play havoc in Maharashtra with the toll mounting to 83 since Tuesday, the State Government sought an immediate relief of Rs 75 crores from the Centre.

With the recovery of two more bodies from Bhiwandi in Thane district today, the toll in the district shot up to 54, even as officials said three people were still missing. Four more were missing in other parts of the State, sources said.

The torrential rain during last few days has seriously affected Bhiwandi, Dahanu, Palghar, Vasai and Wada areas of Thane district.

At least 2055 houses were damaged out of which 1295 were from the Konkan region, 151 from Nashik, 42 from Amravati and 587 from Nagpur, sources said.

In Gujarat, rains continued unabated with the official toll put at 51 amid reports that 13,000 people had been evacuated from low-lying areas of the State. — PTI
