Tehelka chief denies editing portions of tapes

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI July 1. The Editor-in-Chief of the Tehelka portal, Tarun Tejpal, today denied the allegation of the former Samata Party president, Jaya Jaitly, that he had edited out portions relating to Hindujas from the tapes which exposed alleged corruption in defence deals.

Continuing his deposition for the third day, Mr. Tejpal, however, admitted that he went to the Hindujas office complex in London but denied that he met them or any of their officials.

Mr. Tejpal, who was cross-examined by Ms. Jaitly's counsel, said he did go to the building but did not go to their office as at that time he felt it inappropriate to meet the Hindujas, because of their dealing in arms.

When counsel asked him whether he tried to verify the various claims made by the people appearing in the tapes, including those of Army officers, Mr. Tejpal said one could not take the statements in isolation and the claims reflected the level of corruption.

Meanwhile, the portal's reporter, Kumar Badal, who was served a notice by the CBI for interrogation in the `poaching case' failed to appear today on health grounds and the agency is to issue fresh summons for interrogating him.
