By value addition the Government could procure all milk offered by the farmers. But though a good beginning had been made in producing dairy products, the conversion cost was about Rs. 4 a litre of milk. Hence the Government decided to go all-out to push the sale of milk, with an aggressive marketing strategy. The Minister was speaking at the commissioning of a Rs. 57-lakh , 50,000-litre capacity milk chilling plant, near Manapparai. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 6.5 crores for providing loans to about 10,000 women for starting dairy farming during the year. Each member would be given Rs. 2000 as subsidy as Rs.2000 as loan for purchasing cows. The administration of the societies would be entrusted to women. In Tiruchi 20 societies would be formed. K. K. Balasubramanian, Minister for Information, said the Tiruchi union procured over two lakh litres of milk daily, and sent about one-lakh litres to Chennai, after supplying about 80000 litres for local sale. The Education Minister, M. Thambi Durai, explained the impetus given to employment of women especially in rural areas, despite a financial crunch faced by the Government. V.A. Chelliah, MLA, Marungapuri and M. Selvaraj, Manapparai panchayat union Chairman, explained the hardship experienced by the dairy farmers, with the union refusing to buy 20 to 25 per cent of the normal quantity of milk brought by the farmers. The situation would worsen with the onset of monsoon, when the flush season commenced. K. Manivasan, Collector, and chairman of the Tiruchi District Milk Producers Union, said it had earned a profit of about Rs. 2 crores last year after wiping out losses accumulated over the previous years.
