Farm labourers happy as works begin

Thanjavur July 1. Works under the relief package announced by the State Government, with the aim of providing employment to farm labourers began today in Thanjavur district.

S.Kosalaraman, the Collector, R.Vaidyalingam, former Minister and Orathanadu MLA, and P.Rajendran, Project Officer, DRDA, inaugurated the works at Avidanalla Vijayapuram in Orathanadu panchayat union.

A total of 200 men and women began desilting the Nakkundu tank. The work, taken up under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana at a cost of Rs. 1,10,658, would take 20 days to complete.

Saradhammal and Rajathi of the village were happy that they got the work. They were engaged in transplantation work every kuruvai season.

But this year as kuruvai was not taken up for want of water, they were a worried lot. Announcement of relief works came as a boon to them. "We are thankful to Amma,'' they said.

According to Mr.Rajendran, labourers would be paid a wage of Rs. 54 each per day in the form of five kg of rice at the rate of Rs 5.25 and the rest in cash. Wages would be distributed on a weekly basis.

Desilting of Sukkankulam has begun at the Mariamman Koil panchayat near Thanjavur. A total of hundred labourers are employed.

The Public Works Department has employed 80 labourers for the desilting of Kalichapalli main and branch channels at Saliyamangalam.

According to Mr.Velusamy, Executive Engineer, PWD, the canals would be desilted at a cost of Rs. 1,30,500 to a length of 8.5 kms.

As for wages, the department is expecting orders from the Government.

Mr. Kosalaraman, said development works worth Rs. 59.255 crores would be implemented in the district and employment provided for three months. Notice boards have been put up at work spots indicating the nature of work, cost involved and date of starting of work.

Works at Tiruvarur

Development works to the tune of Rs. 48.22 crores would be implemented, said Jeevanandam, Minister for Agriculture at Tiruvarur here today.

He inaugurated the desilting of PWD channels — the Pavuthiramanikkam and the Elavankarukudi channel in Kodaradachery panchayat union.

The channels would be desilted by nearly 100 farm labourers to a length of three km.

The Minister said Rs. 10 crores was allotted by Government for desilting B,C and D types of channels in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.

Out of this Rs 3.20 crores was allocated. A total of 980 works would be taken up and channels to a length of 2,840 km would be desilted.

The Minister supervised the desilting of a tank at Alivalam, the Royanallur tank in Thiruthuraipoondi and two other tanks in Mannargudi.

Desilting of tanks and ponds, weeding out of `neyveli kattamanaku' works and creation of farm ponds were taken up today.

Mr. Jeevanandam and the Zonal Officer, Development Works for Nagapattinam, Vivek Harinarayan, inspected the works in Kilvelore and Nagapattinam Panchayat Union areas.

Talking to reporters earlier, the Zonal Commissioner said special fund was allotted for providing spades and crowbars with 50 percent subsidy to landless labourers.

The Minister told reporters that a sum of Rs.45.60 crores was allocated for taking up various works.
