Award for former IAS official

BANGALORE JULY 1 . Harsh Mander, the IAS officer who resigned protesting against the Gujarat Government's handling of the carnage there, will receive the M.A.Thomas National Human Rights Award for 2002.

A release from the Vigil India Movement said that Mr. Mander was chosen unanimously by a three-member jury comprising V.S.Malimath, former Chief Justice of the Karnataka and Kerala High Courts, and former member of the National Human Rights Commission, Nittoor Srinivasa Rao, former Chief Justice of the Mysore High Court, and T. J. S. George, eminent journalist and managing trustee of the Vigil India Movement.

The IAS officer was chosen from among 218 nominations. The award will be presented to him at a function here in August first week.

Previous recipients of the award include H. Sudarshan, Medha Patkar, and V.R.Krishna Iyer.
