Blended auto fuel

Sir, — Your Editorial `Blended auto fuel' (May 30) speaks of the Government's decision to encourage the use of ethanol as a blending agent in gasoline and the implications involved, including the potential advantages in transition from the conventional petroleum-based fossil fuels to environmentally-clean and renewable fuels. In 1935, buses in Bangalore were using petrol blended with ethanol from the Mandya sugar factory. After World War II, the Indian Institute of Science embarked on the use of ethanol in diesel engines in a dual-fuel mode and as much as 85 per cent of ethanol was used retaining only a small portion of diesel.

B.S. Murthy,
Chennai
