Gen. Powell put through a telephone call to the new Foreign Minister this evening. The pre-arranged call was to get the two leaders know each other better. It was a brief courtesy call and there was no substantive discussion of issues currently in play between the two countries. In touching base with Gen. Powell today, Mr. Sinha is establishing the much-needed personal rapport with the leadership of the United States which is playing a crucial role in pressing Pakistan to end cross-border terrorism against India. Gen. Powell expressed the hope of maintaining the same level of relationship with Mr. Sinha as he did with Jaswant Singh. Mr. Singh has been among about 15 world leaders with whom Mr. Powell had maintained contacts on a regular basis on key international issues.
